January 10 2008, Nokia’s 5800 Xpress Music is launched here in the Philippines. It is said to be an iPhone killer, one of the first touch screen phones from Nokia.
I bought one… as a reward for myself (since iPhone 3G or Xperia is too expensive for me). Ok yeah… It is an impulse buying…hahahah! And here is my informal review:
What I like about it:
- The price! =)
- The little vibration when you touch the screen (tactile/haptic feedback). But I don’t use it hahahah!
- The position of the lock slide, it is easily accessible
- The width (not thin but not too thick)
- Fast connection to the internet
- Viewable flash when surfing the net.
- Configurable input method (big and small QWERTY keyboard, handwriting and yes… the classic alphanumeric keypad)
What I don’t like about it:
- Lousy UI.
- The camera, I expected a better camera resolution. Pictures taken indoors are dull.
- Free downloadable applications are not as many as iPhone’s
- Sony Ericsson phones still sound better.
Here are some pictures taken by my old Nokia 6300:
- Nokia 5800's box
- Nokia 5800 + case + box
- Nokia 5800's back
- Nokia 5800 playing The Dark Knight
Well, that’s all for now… I haven’t used it that much and I have more to discover…
So will Nokia 5800 Xpress Music be an iPhone killer? Nah… I don’t think so… but it would be perfect for those who want a touch screen, Wi-Fi phone but are in a small budget.
This is your friendly neighborhood web developer… and I can’t believe I bought a Nokia 5800 Xpress Music!
« The year that was (late late late) | 10 years… Reunion anyone? »

Have you tried plugging it to your PC/laptop via USB? My unit doesn’t work with Nokia PC Suite with the micro USB.
yup… so far so good
Pare, a cam phone is still a cam phone kahit 3+ megapixels. Tip: Better lighting better pictures. hehe
well 5800 is not boating of its cam… thats why it is Xpress Music edition

Since 5800’s in the Philippines are assembled in China, does it have a WiFi?
Hi Daniel… 5800’s in the Philippines do have WiFi, I think non-WiFi phones are only those that will be distributed to China
Thanks fermie, kasi bumili si mama last week sa Manila, kasi I’m in Tacloban she’ll be home by wednesday and she said the saleslady told her that the 5800 she bought was assembled in china, and I’ve read articles saying that china 5800’s do not have wifi so I thought pati yung chinese made na nandito sa pinas.
Wala bang problems yung unit mo? ok ba siya? maganda ba yung features nya?
My unit is ok, complete, and I love it!
I love the option where you can use alphanumeric keypad for texting. The features are so-so for me. What’s great about this phone is you can download/install application that suits your need.
You can read my post for the thing that I love about it and the things that I didn’t.
BTW, be sure to upgrade your firmware for enhanced performance. The current version that is available for the Philippines is v 21.0.025
Enjoy the new phone!
can you teach me how to upgrade it? or can you link me to a website?
There are two ways of updating your 5800.
First is installing the Nokia Software Updater(NSU) to your PC, connecting your phone then upgrade.
Second is through Firmware Over the Air (FOTA). Just dial*#0000#, then options, then check for updates
